ROOTS workshop and Sirens Fest

Sirens Fest is bringing ROOTS to Sebastopol. Featuring workshops with Leila Farid, Jill Parker, Elizabeth Strong, Dan Cantrell, Amina Goodyear, Susu Pampanin and TerriAnne Gutierrez. ROOTS is Thursday October 4 to Friday October 5 and will end with a spectacular show featuring the workshop teachers and special guest musicians Najah Ghaoui, Jalal Takesh, Susu Pampanin, TerriAnne Gutierrez and Amina Goodyear.

Where Sh'abi meets Mahragan Workshop and Show

Informative and Dance Workshop by Amina Goodyear and Sherifa Zuhur (Samrah)

Sunday 1-5 pm September 30, 2018

12-1 pm - Video clips on the beginnings of mahragan.

1-2 pm - Short history and how music and dance evolved including cultural references.

2-3 pm - Video and music examples with narration showing evolution from beginning of sh'abi to mahragan (late 1960's to present)

3-4 pm - simple sh'abi choreography to perform later at Al Masri - if you wish

4-5 pm - simple mahragan choreography to perform later at Al Masri - if you wish

There will be 5-10 minute breaks when needed or requested.

Amina's Night Club at Carnival of Stars

It’s that time again. It’s sign up time for Carnival of Stars Live music show at
“Amina’s Night Club”(used to be known as the Side Show or the Cabaret Stage).

 

Sign up to dance to live music or maybe CD in a great atmosphere. Delicious food and drinks on one side, non-stop shopping all around, beautiful spacious mirrored dressing area with multiple bathroom facilities, cordoned off secure area to leave your valuables and a great audience sitting at comfy tables and chairs, snacking, drinking and enjoying the show. You may also selfie, take photos or video as much as you want. Bring a little tripod gadget and do it yourself or bring a friend. 

 

Amina’s Night Club will have three (3) different bands on Saturday and one band on Sunday. Feel free to try out the different bands. Or dance to CD. Must register with $5 fee for each performance. (Ex. 2 shows = 2 forms and $10) Please send to Carnival of Stars

Drum and Dance Workshop

Susu and Amina of the Cairo Cats invite you to a very special Dancing Drums workshop on Sunday May 6 from 12-3 pm. Participate in the creation of  new drum dance composition. Dancers and drummers learn the traditional method of Question and Answer in a drum solo. Old school with a new twist. Drummers learn how a drum solo progresses into an exciting climax. Dancers learn how your hips and cymbals can lead a drummer. In this interactive class you will learn the insides of how a drum solo works from a dancer and a drummer point of view. Also learn the importance of spacing (physical and rhythmical) and why the rhythm Baladi is so important. Learn to solo with your drum, riq, duf, cymbals and hips. Opportunity  to later present your drum solo and also debut our new drum dance composition Gawaabni at Al Masri. Dancers, Drummers, You're welcome to use our drums, riqs, dufs and cymbals.  However, re hips - you have to bring your own.

Proceeds from this workshop go towards helping Sherifa al Zuhur PhD get to the World Congress of Middle East Studies in June. It's just our regular irregularly scheduled Giza Club meeting. We will show a documentary on the Hasaballah Band. Second feature is a belly dancing fashion show produced by Amina and The Aswan Dancers in 1991. Showing spectacular fashions and designs by Amina, Shamira, Madame Abla, Madame Hekmet and more.

From the Formal Forties, the Fabulous Fifties, the Skimpy Sixties, the Sexy Seventies, the Automated Eighties and Fashion Predictions for the Nineties and beyond. This is a true study in our dance history. It's all there... the trends and changes.

Plus added attraction - sizzling hot Susu and the Cairo Cats in action.

The Awalim of Mohammad Ali Street and Public Entertainment Halls

Amina, Samrah (Dr. Sherifa Zuhur), the Aswan Dancers and special guests will present an evening of music, dance and costuming in a historical way. They will take you to another time and place.

Egypt from the turn of the 20th century was alive and vibrant with the music and dance of the awalim and the ghawazi. Join us in an evening recreating the salat of Mohammad Ali Street, the stages of Azbikeya Park, Opera Square and Emad el Din Streets, and the silver screen of the golden era of Egypt. Music by found recordings from the early 20th century and live music by the Pasha Band will transport you to this exciting place in dance history.

The Awalim of Mohammad Ali Street and Public Entertainment

-Follow the trail of Bamba Kashar, Shafiqa al-Qabtiyya, Mounira al-Mahdiyya, Fathiyya Ahmad and more

-Jump on the stage with Naguib al-Rihani and Sayyid Darwish

-Follow Isma'il Yassin and Zinat Sedki into the cinema with Farid al-Atrash leading the way for Tahiyya, Samia and Naima. 

-Enjoy the cabarets and nightclubs of Sohair and Nagwa which featured one the last of the awalim, Nadia Hamdi. 

This workshop will lead you through the Golden Age of Egyptian dance and music as it morphed from Ottoman/Arabic to modern music and dance during the Great War (WW1), the 1919 revolution, World War II and the 1952 revolution. 

Follow the trail and learn the roots of modern Egyptian style belly dance and music. Understand that there is meaning, substance and history behind the steps.  In this workshop you will learn how, where and why to apply this substance.

The Pasha Band - The Aswan dancers - Workshop participants 

Sherifa Zuhur,  author or contributing editor of 18 books,  with a PhD in history of the Middle East, MA in Islamic Studies and BA in Arabic and Arabic Literature and Political Science and a Fulbright scholar in both Syria and Egypt, is also known as Samrah the dancer. 

As Samrah she has performed in Egypt, Beirut, Damascus, Amman, Europe as well as the U.S.  in both raqs sharqi and folkoric styles. 

She was a member of Jamila Salimpour’s original Bal-Anat Ensemble, director and choreographer of Amwaj I and Amwaj II, member of the Egyptian National Dance Ensemble, the American University in Cairo Dance Ensemble and the Layalina Dance Ensemble. 

Amina Goodyear danced at the Bagdad Cabaret (and the Casbah) from the '60's to the '80's during San Francisco's  golden era of Middle Eastern dance. She is known for her many projects and staying power. The Aswan Dancers (since 1975), The Cairo Cats, the Salamat Sundays and the Arabian Knights Band, Caravan Band, the Giza Club (since 1990) and the Giza Academy Awards are only a few of the personal troupes, bands and organizations  that she founded or co-founded. 

She is also recognized for her contributions to furthering the dance, music and culture receiving a lifetime achievement award from NYC's American Academy of Middle Eastern Dance 1994. 

Amina is a passionate collector of all genres of Egyptian film and music and loves to share her knowledge of dance, music and culture in her classes, the Giza Club, workshops and themed shows.
